We recently made videos for two new demos called RUN and CHAINS. Both the recordings and the videos were made entirely by us, one featuring a young man running around the cornwall countryside and the other a masked kidnapping party cult.

We also put a night on recently at Ryan’s bar with the excellent New Cut Gang  which was great, so thanks to everyone for coming down. The next Ragpicker night will be happening at some point over the summer so keep those eyes peeled…

Holy crap it’s been a long time since i’ve been on this thing, (I have never used the expression ‘holy crap’ in my life but it feels appropriate for the life changing blog that follows… I can see Sean has been hogging all the limelight on this thing.. and let me tell you now that ain’t going to fly no more.. anyway back to the blog).  First of all we are playing at Buffalo Bar next to Highbury and Islington station this Saturday and it will be brilliant. The promoter is one of our favourites and always puts on a decent night of excellent bands and debauchery, PLUS the Spoons next door has a beautiful backdrop with colourful characters to match and fully caters for all your Jaeger Bomb needs. So yes we have been writing loads of new tunes recently and I occasionally record them on a pimped out dictaphone type thing that captures the mess beautifully, see results below. Some are new songs for potential release, some are part of a proposed EP that tells the tale of a fictional character called Elliot Strange which would contain my particular favourite track which is a noisy triptych called Paint it by Numbers and it seems to have an effect not dissimilar to Marmite on the crowd. Personally I think the repetitive E6/b9?% is reminiscent of the shrill finale of Shostakovich’s 5th Symphony.. maybe just in my head?

On much less pretentious note our favorite thing to come out of Birmingham since heavy metal are called Bombers and are very good or as Artrocker has described em: ‘The Birthday Party running riot in Joy Division’s and Swans back garden’. They have started a club night in their home town called 88mph, so if you are from the midlands check it out and check them out.

We will hopefully be venturing to play the night in the coming months which will probably be around the same time as we release some of these new tunes which will probably mean doing some UK touring again which will DEFINITELY mean more van times.  With this realization and foresight I have decided to take it upon myself (with absolutely no permission or communication with the rest of the band as I know what their reaction will be.. maybe apart from Ben, Ben’s alright actually) to design the next tour bus with the finest snapshots of Mr. Springsteen. New year, new music

A new year dawns like a slap in the face – ‘Oh shit, it’s January, I should update the blog!’

And indeed, as the haze of late night jubilation finally lifts I am compelled to write (if only to stop such entries becoming a similarly, if somewhat less stressful, annual event).

But where to start? Many things have happened since that last splurge found its way onto your screens…

Perhaps it would be best to begin by mentioning the inaugural ‘Ragpicker Presents’ night, held almost exactly a month ago at the Hobby Horse in Dalston. Which, despite its numerous setbacks (the tales of double bookings, multiple house DJs and snapping drum kits could really use a blog entry of their own) was a lot of fun with cracking sets by both Bombers and You me and the moon. We will be doing more in the future as and when we feel like it, but thanks to everyone who came down and got involved.

Other nights worthy of a mention include a headline slot at Buffalo Bar, which was great, another show at Powers Bar (K-Town 4 eva) and of course our little excursion to Luton, which can be best summarised by the following image:

Anyway, the most newsworthy thing that we have done recently was to spend a day in the Studio recording upcoming single ‘The Dane’.  I won’t give too much away other than to say that it will be released in February, and we will be going on tour to support it.  We have released details of the tour here: http://www.facebook.com/#!/event.php?eid=182871388393136

So if you reside in any of the places mentioned, do come along and support us – we may well need it. And to those of you in London, make sure you make it to the last show of the tour at the Camden Barfly; it’s the single launch night and should be a biggun. No excuses.

Now, being all independent and shit means that we have our work cut out with all this, as I’m sure you can imagine. Yet, as we cautiously dip our toes in the murky underworld of promo and PR I find myself taking more and more notice of how other new bands are promoted and received.  The ‘hyping’ of new bands is a particular fascination. For example as I sat in the recording studio waiting to do a vocal take, I was flicking through a month or so old NME and came across a live review of an up and coming band. You may well have heard of The Vaccines, a young four piece playing punky surf pop tunes who have risen out of nothing to become practically THE hot tip for 2011 (or so I’m lead to believe – obviously I pay no attention to such trivialities…).

Now, I quite like them, I’ve only heard a song or two but they sound pretty good. The review however, written about a recent London show, appeared to be concerned with nothing other than how LITERALLY FUCKING MASSIVE these guys are going to be, and how they are LIKE THE BEST BAND EVAH. Not only did the writer spend the first part of the review informing us how packed the place was with famous people and A&R men, but they then proceeded to describe the gig as some sort of epoch defining event – this gig, apparently, was as important as the Sex Pistols at the Manchester Free Trade Hall in 76.  Now, I won’t say that this is completely impossible; but it is not the sort of thing you can state with any degree of confidence at the time. For any event to be truly significant, it needs time to resonate; to gather importance. The Free Trade Hall in 76 was important because many members of the relatively small audience were inspired to go on and create brilliant music. The Vaccines at the Flower pot in London 2010 was a gig that seems to have been entirely populated by various indie celebs and corporate money men. It may well go on to spawn countless important bands, but until it does, all it really is is a celebration of a band who have managed to capture the attention of the record industry; which in fairness, in its current state, is something to be impressed by.

And yet, where does this actually get us? Are such ridiculous levels of uber-hype even beneficial? Well on the surface, yes: hype leads to exposure. But in the long run? I’m not so convinced. I read that review before I had consciously listened to any of their songs, and as such was understandably expecting some sort of life affirming, earth shattering eargasm that no song could ever deliver. And because of this, rather than the joy of chancing across a song that is good fun and catchy (if somewhat derivative), I was left just a little underwhelmed. Which is a shame.

This sort of treatment also only helps to increase my frankly already high levels of cynicism. So the guitarist’s brother is in the Horrors? Ok. And the singer, in a previous life, was one of the nu-folk set (think mumford, marling, noah etc etc). Ok. No big deal, but add this to the monstrous levels of dribbling sycophancy from various sections of the media and it’s hard to resist seeing the Vaccines as not so much an organic entity, but more as an example of shrewd marketing, nepotism and networking. And as such, that gig reviewed in the NME becomes little more than a backslapping exercise; a big media circle jerk with journos hailing them saviours of rock and roll not because they believe it or feel it, but because they need it. Papers like the NME need a new, cool, sellable indie band so they can sell more copies; the hyping here is not so much a reaction to something, but a transparent attempt to create something.

Not to take anything away from The Vaccines of course, who as I have said, I like. But it will be interesting to see whether all the hype benefits them, or buries them.

Oh and interestingly, the same article also referenced another hotly tipped new band, Brother, who were apparently locked in a race with The Vaccines to see who would get the biggest record deal (exciting!). From what I can tell, all you need to know is that Brother are britpop revivalists (yawn), they wear sunglasses and stand in front of union jacks, and their video features a couple of naked women. Now, if there is anything that implies a lack of confidence in the music, this is surely it.

And they also came onstage recently and said something like “If anyone doesn’t want to hear the future of music, leave now”. Hee hee hee

So as you can see, I have certain reservations about the press and the way it treats bands. But nevertheless, the headline is, we will be debuting our single to no media fanfare whatsoever in February. I for one am excited!

Oh and if anyone wants to hear us trying out some new songs for the tour, come down to the Bull and Gate on January 13th and see us creaking back into action after a lengthy christmas break.

Back in Biddles

Ok, so my previous decision to update this blog more frequently was clearly made on the assumption that I’m not a massively lazy idiot. My apologies. But anyway, here we are, and on we go.

First of all, thanks to all those who came along to Biddle Bros last week. It was a cracking night in which, after a normal set, we we’re joined by a violin, a viola and a cornet (Alice, Debs and Brad – Thank you!) for a couple of songs. It had all been fairly hastily put together but seemed to work well, and was very enjoyable. Hope you all had a good night (unlike our sofa, which decided it couldn’t handle anymore partying and was going to end it all – it’s now completely beyond repair). Check out a photo:

Also big thanks must go to Toot Sweet for taking on the role of impromptu sound engineer, before kindly stepping behind the decks and delighting the Biddle Bros’ clientele with his mad skillzz. Sickkk. He was also involved in an entertaining altercation on the night bus home, where he was reprimanded by an upstanding member of society (who had in no way been drinking/injecting crack into his eyeballs) for innocently saying the word ‘parents’. It appears you can’t say that word in public in case anyone overhears you who might have certain corresponding issues. To be fair Aidan, calm down yeah?? YEAH??

It’s a collection of retro surf pop bangers, and it really is worth a listen. ‘Hits like mourning’ is a full on, no messing classic. Plus, did I mention that they’re really friendly?

“Can you fill me in?”

It has been some while since the last entry on this blog announced the release of our EP, and yet while things have certainly been quiet around here in blogland, the non virtual world of les recusants has been a hive of activity. Well maybe not quite a hive, but it’s certainly been a bit active.

Shortly after it was released the EP received a ‘review’ in stool pigeon – in which the author managed to more or less convey his general indifference to us without directly calling us shit or cunts (an act of generosity not bestowed upon most of the other bands featured in his column), which I am choosing to take as a positive. We have also managed to get the EP into a couple of proper shops, namely Flashback on Essex road and the legendary Rough Trade which we are very happy about. So if you’re in the area why not pick up a copy? It would be like buying a real cd by a real band from a real shop. Wow! Furthering the general air of excitement, the EP then had it’s first (as far as we’re aware) taste of national radio exposure courtesy of Steve Lamacq, who chose to end his 6music show with ‘Take me home’. This was a very pleasant surprise, and it was made even more pleasant by Mr Lamacq having to apologise for my ‘potty mouth’ straight after the song. So I have now sworn on BBC national radio, take that you fuckers! Badass! Stickin’ it to the man! etc etc

In way of celebration for all this we held a launch night at the wonderful Power’s Bar in K-Town. It was a fun night with some  great performances from both the banjo picking Chris Fowler and Kandahar Chorus, as well as showcasing some superb work on the ones and twos from 145 resident DJ extraordinaire Dickie Draper. Oh, and we played aswell:

I did intend to include some non band related things this time as I feel in some ways this blog is becoming nothing more than a chronology of events, which was not the intention. NEW EP OUT NOW!

So it’s here, our new EP is released today! Yay!

However, before I tell you all about it, this is the previous week in the life of the recusants…

Just as the England team had finished majestically thrashing Slovenia 1-0, managing in the process to once again inject the entire country with a massive dose of stupid bloody optimism, we were heading down to the Old Blue Last in shoreditch to play a gig. We had been asked to play acoustically, and thought that as such, we should take that opportunity to try something a bit different. Because you see, we in the recusants have a secret weapon, and that weapon’s name is Tom ‘the bassmaster’ Rundell. It is perhaps little known that as well as totally lording it in the world of electric bass guitar, the T-man also happens to play a mean double bass. So come Wednesday we thought it was high time to break out that gargantuan machine of badassery, and show the folk at the Old Blue Last the true meaning of the word BASS. Check out the results:

The gig was fun, and it was great to be followed by the shutes and eight legs, both bands we are big fans of. So cheers to those who came along.

On Saturday we were at the Buffalo Bar for a full band gig, and although the place wasn’t that busy when we started, it had filled up nicely by the end. The gig also saw the debut of our newly done up drum kit, complete with customised bass drum skin, this photo gives you some idea:

But yes, back to the point: today is the day our debut EP Skulls is released! What better way to get over the England team’s woeful display yesterday than to get hold of our new cd? It consists of four tracks: Take Me Home, Skulls, Young Hearts and Death Orchestral, was recorded at Moat Farm Studios and mastered at Abbey Road. It is available digitally from itunes, amazon (links below) and soon spotify, so go and buy buy buy! If you want more bang for your buck, we also have 200 limited edition physical copies, each with an individually hand sewn and painted sleeve, and full colour 8 page booklet. A tale of two gigs

Hello everyone,

I know you’re all dying for more mundane updates on the gradual progress of our forthcoming EP, but unfortunately this time I have little to share.  To compensate here is a nice picture:

It’s of a cow living it up in the field behind the studio we we’re recording in. Note the dirt jumps in the background – never before has a recording session been so threatened by a producer’s desire for motocross.

Anyway, last saturday we played a headline slot at Tommy Flynn’s. That’s right. We are the bigtime. And as it turned out it was most enjoyable. It’s always refreshing to be booked by a promoter who isn’t a twat, as opposed to the usual crop of cynical money grabbers more likely to be found harrassing punters for their hard earned coin than actually listening to the band they’ve booked.

Yeah yeah yeah, I hear you, promoters need to earn a living too, whatEVER.

But rather than acting like so many promoters we have encountered, the guy in charge of the night was always on hand to get us another drink and have a chat. And when a promoter seems to be actually trying to get you pissed, instead of fobbing you off with a couple of beer vouchers to share, you know you’re on to a winner. It is behaviour such as this that makes us warm to a night, and it’s much easier to enjoy a gig when you feel valued in some way. Tommy Flynn’s also has a full backline available (drums and amps) which, as readers of the previous blog will be aware, is a very welcome addition. So cheers to Dan for making the effort, and thanks to those who came down (the dancers at the front get a special mention), it was fun.

Another gig I attended this week was the one and only performance by much hyped act Venison. I had managed to acquire tickets somehow (much to the annoyance of other band members, who insist they didn’t even want to go…) and so come Wednesday was at a packed Dingwalls in Camden, bopping along to all the hits in the sweltering heat like some sort of crazed teenager. It was, to be sure, fucking excellent. Here is a video I took. The visuals are shit, but the audio will give you some idea of what it was like:

I am off on my hols this week, but will be back in time to do a special gig at the Old Blue Last on the 23rd where, following a screening of the England Match, there will be an acoustic set by ourselves (featuring some totally badass double bass action) and then full sets by two awesome bands: THE SHUTES and EIGHT LEGS. In other news:

  • Tom’s finger wound has now more or less healed. He is quoted as saying that the level of discomfort is no more than the feeling of ‘a small pencil pressing into your finger’. Good.

  • *Slightly shit celeb spotting update*- I saw the drummer from coldplay entering Dingwalls to see Venison (oh ok, the strokes). He was on the guestlist, the fucker.
